According to Hindu mythology, the Goddess in this form is believed to be Parvati, who performed intense penance to marry Shiva. In her previous birth, she was Sati. To win Lord Shiva as her husband again, she undertook severe austerities for thousands of years.
It is said that she survived for years by eating fruits and leaves, and later continued her penance by living only on air and water, demonstrating extraordinary devotion and determination.

दूसरे दिन देवी के दूसरे स्वरूप ब्रह्मचारिणी की पूजा की जाती है। यह स्वरूप तप, संयम, भक्ति और ज्ञान का प्रतीक माना जाता है। माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी भक्तों को धैर्य, दृढ़ संकल्प और आध्यात्मिक शक्ति प्रदान करती हैं।
नवरात्रि के नौ दिनों में देवी के नौ रूपों की पूजा की जाती है और दूसरा दिन हमें यह संदेश देता है कि सच्ची सफलता और आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के लिए तप और अनुशासन आवश्यक है।
माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी का अर्थ
ब्रह्मचारिणी शब्द दो भागों से मिलकर बना है:

अर्थात् वह देवी जो तपस्या और ब्रह्म ज्ञान का पालन करती हैं।
पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी वही देवी हैं जो पिछले जन्म में सती थीं। अगले जन्म में उन्होंने पार्वती के रूप में जन्म लिया और भगवान शिव को पति रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिए कठोर तपस्या की।
कथा के अनुसार देवी पार्वती ने हजारों वर्षों तक कठिन तप किया। पहले उन्होंने केवल फल और पत्तों पर जीवन व्यतीत किया और बाद में उन्होंने जल और वायु के सहारे अपनी तपस्या जारी रखी। उनकी इसी महान तपस्या के कारण उन्हें ब्रह्मचारिणी कहा गया।
माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी का स्वरूप
माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी का स्वरूप अत्यंत सरल, शांत और तपस्विनी माना जाता है।
उनकी विशेषताएँ:
- दाहिने हाथ में – जपमाला
- बाएँ हाथ में – कमंडल
